Responding to a frantic distress call from the overrun scientists, the Martian marine unit is quickly sent by ship from Mars to Phobos to investigate, where the player character is left to guard the perimeter with only a pistol while the rest of the group proceeds inside. Computer systems on Phobos malfunction, Deimos disappears entirely, and "something fraggin' evil" (demons) starts pouring out of the gateways, killing or possessing all personnel. This all changes when the experiments go horribly wrong. Mars is considered by space marines to be the dullest assignment imaginable. The space marines act as security for the Union Aerospace Corporation's radioactive waste facilities, which are used by the military to perform secret experiments with teleportation by creating gateways between the two moons of Mars, Phobos and Deimos. The player takes the role of an unnamed space marine ("Doomguy") who has been punitively posted to Mars after assaulting a superior officer, who ordered his unit to fire on civilians. A colony shuttle carrying an infectious Necromorph caused the scourge to spread across the Ishimura. An alien virus, the genetic coding of which is encrypted on the Marker, began ravaging the Aegis VII colony, infecting any available corpses and turning them into "Necromorphs" – mutated and reanimated corpses that violently slaughter uninfected humans to spread the infestation. Chief Science Officer Terrance Kyne tried to relieve Mathius of duty, only to accidentally kill the captain in a struggle. Mathius cut off traffic and communications between the two sides, later going insane. Soon after the Marker's extraction to the Ishimura, humans from the planet's colony and the ship suffered from mass hysteria and violent hallucinations, before subsequently killing each other. Captain Mathius, a devout Unitologist, shifted focus from mining to retrieving the Marker, after being asked by the Church of Unitology to do so. She demands that he meets her on deck 4 of the Von Braun.Īs Isaac Clarke moves about making the necessary repairs, he discovers various text and audio logs scattered throughout the ship, piecing together the events that transpired prior to their arrival: during the course of its illegal mining of Aegis VII, the Ishimura crew found the Red Marker, the most valuable relic of Unitology, an influential and powerful religion. Janice Polito, who guides him to safety before the cabin depressurizes. He is immediately contacted by another survivor, Dr. Owing to a computer malfunction, the remaining soldier awakens with amnesia in a cryo-tube on the medical deck of the Von Braun, being implanted with an illegal cyber-neural interface. The parasites eventually spread to both ships and take over or kill most of their crews. A rescue team is sent to the planet's surface where they discover strange eggs these eggs, found in an old ejection pod, infect the rescue team and integrate them into an alien communion known as "the Many" - a psychic hive mind generated by parasitic worms which can infect and mutate a human host. In July 2114, 5 months into the journey, the ships respond to a distress signal from the planet Tau Ceti V, outside the Solar System. However, Korenchkin was egotistical enough to make himself the captain of the Von Braun despite being inexperienced. Because the Rickenbacker does not have an FTL system of its own, the two ships are attached for the trip. The ship is also followed by a UNN space vessel, the Rickenbacker, which is controlled by Captain William Bedford Diego, son of Edward Diego, the Citadel Station's infamous commander and public hero of the Battle of the Boston Harbor during the Eastern States Police Action. In January 2114, 42 years after the Citadel events and 12 years into rebuilding TriOptimum, the company created an experimental FTL starship, the Von Braun, which is now on its maiden voyage. The new UNN was almost virtually powerless with Korenchkin exercising control over them. Along with producing healthcare and consumer products, Korenchkin signed weapons contracts with various military organizations, private and political-owned. He re-licensed and restored the company to its former status in the following decade. In 2100, 28 years later, the company's failed stocks and assets were bought by a Russian oligarch named Anatoly Korenchkin, a former black market operator who sought to make money in legitimate ways.
